Russia's Isinbayeva nominated for European Athlete of the Year
21:02 | 16/ 09/ 2008
MOSCOW, September 16 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's 2004 and 2008 Olympic pole vault champion Yelena Isinbayeva has been nominated for the 2008 Waterford Crystal European Athlete of the Year Trophy.
The 26-year-old Russian, who has broken the world pole vault record 24 times, most recently at the Olympic Games in Beijing, won the trophy in 2005 after becoming the first woman to clear 5 meters while setting a total of nine world records that year alone.
The trophy was introduced in 1993 by the European Athletics Association and is awarded based on the results of public voting.
This year, a total of 39 athletes have been nominated for the award, 19 in the men's category and 20 for the women's prize.

Yelena Isinbayeva / RUS Pole Vault
Sucessfully defended her Olympic title with a new world record height of 5.04m in Beijing, her 4th of the season. Won 12/13 top class competitions in 2008.
they don't even have their fact straight there.
Nevertheless, good luck Isi !

Off by a centimeter and misspelled "successfully". Anything else?

It's obviously not an issue of particularly great importance, but I sent a quick (but polite) note the the "office" contact listed on the EAA site pointing out the error yesterday. Right away I got a "thank you" reply from Kirsty Anderson, who's listed as their Communication Co-ordinator, and today the entry has been corrected.

Well, if you really want to be complete about it, they forgot to mention her World Indoor Championship 2008 title.
But to be honest I think some of the writing is a bit on the subjective side like for instance Kanter, Kozmus, Spotakova, etc. all had losses in 2008, but you'd think they went unbeaten when they only mention their wins, while for others they mention exactly how many wins they had out of how many competitions or otherwise specifically mention some of their losses. They also have incomplete or inaccurate information for some athletes (Schwazer bronze instead of silver in WRWC, Silnov's European Cup, etc.), but not for others. I hope the voters won't be influenced too much by little tidbits like these.
