Okay. As i was eating my corn dog at the local eat em' good. i was reading a fishing magazine and i noticed the bend in the fishing pole, i realized how much it can bend. Then i remembered that most new fishing poles are made out of graphite. Is there a way to make graphite polevaulting poles? Or have they been made? I was thinking they could be better but then i thought of the re-coil.....i dunno. does this make sense? What are your guys's thoughts?

Carbon and Graphite are vertually the same when it comes to fiberglass products.

Vaulting poles have memory too!
A Carbon Pole is a hybrid of glass sometimes as much as three different types used in one pole to get the ratio needed. Carbon cannot carry the load by its self. Other weaves and layers must work together to provide both hoop and tensile to carry the loads you vaulters put into these poles.
Carbon will hold 4 times the linear load ( but in a linear has no hoop unless sprialed) but when the energy moves away from it the other glass has too with stand the same stress.
Carbon requires an engineer to monitor stress points in designs.
Xlogic Sports Inc. has two engineers.
One from the hockey, golf industry/ Beto and another who has worked on NASA type projects, mechanical design, John.

A fishing rod is much more flexible but on a smaller scale for less loads and the diameter is smaller too.
The smaller the diameter the more flexural characteristics but with more weight as you add glass to hold specific loads required in vaulting.
Is fishing rod an answer yes some ideas from that industry have been used in the making of a vaulting pole.

I loved this... my boys are all fishermen and licensed fishing guides in Alaska. Use your comparison on the fishing poles and weights they have to use when hauling up a 200lb halibut off the ocean floor in a current. I have seen the boys use delicate handmade carbon fly rods to big honking ocean rods. the bend is a beautiful thing. And thanks for the techno explanation on the carbon poles, that was excellent.

Fishing and pole vaulting - and interesting combination. Actually, the inspiration for a fiberglass pole vaulting pole came from the father of a California high school pole vaulter. The father had seen these large fiberglass fishing poles and wondered if they could be used as pole vaulting poles. He took his idea to Herb Jenks at Browning-Silaflex and Herb put together the first fiberglass pole vaulting pole. That was 55 years ago - in 1949!
